The Job Search

First of all...The logo I designed came out really great. After 2 days of churning out ideas- I narrowed it down to 3 options.  We refined one of them until we got to the end point.  There were a few hiccups in the file formatting, but all went well in the end.  The timing of the bronchitis/laryngitis could not have been worse- but the logo design supplemented the income lost from days away from flying.

That brings me to my current goal: finding full time work. I have to admit I am mostly lost when it comes to finding a job in graphic design. But I am up to the challenge.....I want to land a full time job within 3 months.

What I do know: You have to have a resume and as a graphic designer, the resume is another design problem.  So designers...any advice? I've designed mine with a 2 color accents and type treatments. How do you feel about color in resumes?

Logo Designing

It has been awhile since I have really done any client work.  I have forgotten how difficult clients can be to work with when they have no idea what they want.  BUT I never back down from a challenge.  This one is tough.

The challenge is to come up with something that pleases their team.  They loved my samples that landed me the gig, but are not pleased with a single design I present them with. They want it to be simple but not geometric. They want it to reference Christianity, but be universal in religious reference. They have provided a long list of what they do not want, yet very little in what they DO want.

My options seem quite limited.  I know something will come to me.  As a young designer, this experience is invaluable because clients are like that.  It's my job to guide them and solve their problem.

The more I continue on this project, the more frustrating it becomes- We live in a world so inundated with images produced digitally, that coming up with something so groundbreakingly different from anything else seems damn near impossible.

Wish me luck.

Oh and my doctor diagnosed me with Bronchitis & Laryngitis. Treatment for the latter includes 24 hours of voice rest ending at 2pm today. What a GREAT way to conduct a teleconference with my client.

Update

It has been awhile since I've last posted. Somehow I still find blogging about the everyday Flight Attendant thing more fun.

This week I am flying two trips in a row that are 3 days long- so 6 days with a night at home in the middle. Along with a Friday deadline for a freelance project, an undiagnosed upper respiratory infection as joined me for this week of flying.  I will deliver the project as promised and end up finishing up at least one trip.  Flying sick is never good- it's not like a desk job where I can just sit in my cubicle (or office!) and not talk to anyone.

The more fun project I have going on is to design a set of luggage tags for a co-worker.  She used to work for ATA Airlines before they shut down....she's also been a huge supporter of my goals to transition out of the Flight Attendant thing and into full time graphic design.

That's what I have been up to....sorry it's not that exciting or profound.
